Why do we need to study 3 hours a day to be able to speak Japanese?

At our Japanese language coaching school, NihongoDo, students study Japanese for 3 hours a day. This is because it is absolutely necessary to achieve the goal in a short period of time.

We would like to show you the reason along with the results of the FSI research.

The time required for an American diplomat to be able to speak Japanese is 2,200 hours

English and Japanese have very different linguistic structures.
According to research conducted by FSI, an agency affiliated with the U.S. Department of State, it takes 2,200 hours of study for an American diplomat to be able to speak Japanese.

To be able to speak Greek, which is in the fourth most difficult category, it takes 1,100 hours, so you can see how far apart English and Japanese are as languages.

If you don't aim for complete mastery,you need less time to learn.

2,200 hours is the time required to fully master the Japanese language.
However, if you only need Japanese for limited situations such as travel or business meetings, or if your goal is just to be able to communicate with others, this study time can be shortened to some extent.

At least 500～1,000 hours

It is estimated that a beginner Japanese language learner will need at least 500 to 1,000 hours to achieve some results.
Just like practicing a sport or musical instrument, improving your language skills will inevitably require a certain amount of study time. Although it depends on your goals, NihongoDO sets a primary goal of 500 to 1,000 hours of study.

It takes at least 5.8 years at a traditional Japanese language school

Most Japanese language schools offer one or two 50-minute lessons per week.

If you study for one year, the total study time will be as follows.

• Once a week：50 min× 52 weeks＝ 2,600 min（Approx. 43 hours）
• Twice a week：100 min× 52 weeks＝ 5,200 min（Approx. 86 hours）

This means that if you take lessons once a week at a Japanese language school,you will need about 11.6 years to achieve 500 hours! If you take lessons twice a week, it still takes about 5.8 years.

How many people around you have become fluent in Japanese simply by attending a conventional Japanese language school? Conventional Japanese language schools do not provide enough study time at all, and unfortunately, it is obvious why it's hard to get good results.
